Many vocational trainings require a certain level of high school graduation. For some vocational trainings, trainees must be at least 18 years old. If they are not yet of age, their legal representatives, usually parents, sign the training contract. You must apply to the relevant institutions for vocational training.

Since 2005, an amendment to the Vocational Training Act has made it possible to complete in-company training part-time if there is a legitimate interest. This may be due to the care of your own children or a health restriction. In principle, all training professions can also be learned part-time. The minimum number of hours, including vocational school, is 20 hours per week. If training is completed part-time, the training period is usually extended by six to twelve months. If training that has already been started is interrupted, for example due to illness or pregnancy, it is also possible to complete it part-time.

Salaries vary greatly depending on the profession, sector and location of training. In the case of school-based training, the trainee usually does not receive any salary. In company-based training programs, the salary is between 500 and 1250 euros. The salary increases in the second and third years of training.

The goal is usually to learn a state-recognized profession. Although company-based training programs are often paid, money is not the main focus. The primary goal is for trainees to expand their knowledge and prepare for future careers.

The list of recognised teaching professions is long. For most teaching professions a specific school leaving qualification is required or specified.

Of course, you can work in the profession you have learned immediately after your vocational training. Many companies are happy to take on trainees. However, lifelong learning is very important today. Taking on training or further education after your vocational training, expanding your specialist knowledge, developing professionally and personally, and climbing the career ladder will give you an advantage in the industry. It also gives you the chance to take on more responsible roles after working in your job for a few years. Many degree programmes and further education courses can also be completed as part-time distance learning courses.
